Malware, short for malicious software, is any software used to disrupt computer operation, gather sensitive information, or gain access to private computer systems. Malware is defined by its malicious intent, acting against the requirements of the computer user, and does not include software that causes unintentional harm due to some deficiency. The term badware is sometimes used, and applied to both true (malicious) malware and unintentionally harmful software. This is the Wikipedia opening paragraph in its definition. Click/Touch here to learn more.

There are hundreds of different types of malware and thousands upon thousands of variations. Virus is actually a sub-species of malware, but for simplicity sake I will use the term virus for all types.

The perfect virus is one you don’t even know you have. It steals your credit card numbers, user/login names, passwords, PINs, EINs, SS #s, photographs, browsing history, essintially ANYTHING you have EVER used that computer for. Corporations use the same techniques to track employees performance (or lack thereof). Fortunatly for you and me the real nasty virus’ are picked up fairly quick by badass Black Hats (who now have to work for vaious agencys – you’ve seen the tv shows) and methods of the virus removal are created.

“It is absloutely trivial to write a program that identifies all infected programs with 100% accuracy.” – Eugene Spafford.

Virus removal is a tedious and time consuming task, no one or two programs will remove most all types and variations and, of course, we all know that there is no such thing as 100% efficiency in anything man made. So… that is why on most normal computers it takes 3-5 hours to complete this task.

Virus removal is not something you should take lightly. If there are just a few annoying popups or unusual quirks, it is usually a sign that a much larger and more dangerous virus is lurking in the shadows waiting to manifest itself.

To me computer repair is a sub-catagory of service. It connotes that there is something phisically wrong with the machine. If it blue screens right after you load a new program or app then that could be the cause, but in most cases a piece of hardware has gone bad. If you are fearless, I have included a short homemade video to show the most common and obvious components of motherboard hardware failure resulting in BSOD.Computer repair is someone simply replacing a defective hard drive and driving away. Does your computer work? NO… unless you know how to restore your backup, ummm… you do make backups of your hard drive regularly don’t you?!?

There are many ways to set up a computer backup regimine, from the very simple to the very complex. Computer backup is the storing of data on your computer onto other media besides your hard disk to prepare for the event that data is lost or destroyed on your computer. Everyone who works with computers knows Computer Backupthe difficulties that computers often cause, with program malfunctions, system crashes, computer viruses and the like. If ou have important or critical data on your hard drive, then backup is critical. If you store music & photographs – sometimes those items are irreplaceable. If you run a business, then the fact that 80% of businesses that lose their data never reopen their doors – should cause you to IMMEDIATELY set up backups that will work on your system. If anything happens to your computer or the data on your computer and you do not have proper backups of the data that is important to you, then it is a very difficult process if not impossible to recover your files. Having proper backups of all your important files can make your computing experience easier and safer – and it can be set up to run automatically.

There are 4 basic rules for safe computing:

  • insure system is malware free
  • Backup

Routine maintenance or computer tune-up is a lot like brushing your teeth every day or bathing at least once a week (whether you need it or not), auto tune-up etc… if you let the small issues build up then it can turn into a major overhaul before you know it. Suddenly you are faced with costly repairs. A computer tune-up is something you can absolutely do yourself, if you are willing to put the time and effort into it. I recommend a full tune-up at least once a quarter. There is a page dedicated to the programs I use here.
